What I've Learned... Never Will I Ever

Never will I ever step into a tanning bed. According to the Melanoma Research Foundation, as much as 90% of melanomas are caused by UV exposure - this includes both the sun and tanning beds. The WHO's IARC classifies tanning beds as a carcinogen! If you are looking for Vitamin D, you won't find it in a tanning bed. If you have a good diet, your Vitamin D levels should be fine. UVB radiation is needed for Vitamin D production, UVA is the type found in tanning beds.

I have friends who have a family history of skin cancer, yet they still use tanning beds - especially in the winter. However, this can triple your risk of skin cancer! In other countries (ex. Brazil) tanning is illegal, but it's still legal here in the US. So no thanks, but I'll stick to the sun if anything.

However, I did just get my first spray tan at Sun Tan City. It was my birthday and their free spray tan week, so I decided to give it a try with some friends. I wanted a glowing look, not necessarily a tan. The DHA found in the spray acts with dead skin cells and darkens them, this is what gives you a tan. Although I didn't wear any protection for my mucous membranes, I'm not too worried about any inhalation risks because I would only spray tan when it's free. The effects only last a week or so, because that's how long it takes for the dead skin cells to slough off. Would I get another spray tan? Yeah, when it's free.

Never will I ever spend money on slot machines. My boyfriend goes multiple times a week to Ho-Chunk Gaming Madison, spending anywhere from a little to a lot of money on their slot machines. However, after losing a large sum of money, he's now banned. Slot machines trick you. 40 cents lost soon becomes 4 dollars. And the amount seems small but over time, you lose a lot. You bet and you bet and you bet, waiting for that one spin that will make it all worth it. But it never comes. Maybe one day I'll play blackjack, but I'll never use a slot machine.

Never will I ever smoke a cigarette. My boyfriend also smokes. Although this doesn't annoy me as much as the casino, it does make me worried about his health. He doesn't have the best diet to start with, neither do I, and smoking doesn't help.  Smoking is the leading cause of preventable deaths in the US and that terrifies me because it starts off as a choice and quickly turns into an addiction. Smoking has so many health consequences... the body is never quite the same for a chronic smoker. Even if you quit.

I still love my boyfriend despite these things. But it brings into question what the future will look like. If smoking will becoming an annoying habit and gambling changes into irresponsibility and money issues. Or if his bad eating habits turn from late night snacks to health problems... I wonder what he would think if he read this 💔
